Women in N+geria Are Too Reliant on Patriarchy Compared to Women in the U.K. — Media Personality Missdemz Makes Bold Claim

Media personality Missdemz has stirred conversations after sharing her views on the differences between women in Nigeria and the United Kingdom during a recent episode of the TeaWithTay podcast.

Speaking on the podcast, Missdemz said she believes women who grow up in the U.K. are generally more independent, while women in Nigeria tend to rely more on men because of the country’s patriarchal structure.

“I feel like growing up in London, you’re more independent… I feel like being here in Nigeria, you’re more dependent on people. I feel like you can’t survive in this country and not know a man,” she said.

Using an encounter with the police as an example, she explained that in Nigeria she would feel compelled to seek help from a man, unlike in the U.K., where she believes another woman could confidently handle the situation.

“With that police situation, I can’t call women. You have to call a man. In the U.K., if I have a problem with police, I can call another woman and one of us can deal with those officers,” she added.

Missdemz attributed the difference to Nigeria being “a very patriarchal society,” but noted that social media has helped amplify conversations around gender equality and women’s rights. According to her, while progress may be gradual, even a “5%” improvement should be acknowledged.

She also pointed to changing public attitudes toward domestic vi%lence, arguing that men now face greater public backlash for publicly disrespecting or ab¥sing their partners than they did years ago.

During the discussion, the podcast host referenced cases where victims of domestic vi%lence are encouraged by family members to return to ab¥sive marriages, saying some mothers still tell their daughters, “It’s because he loves you… he’s correcting you. Go back home.”

Responding to the scenario, Missdemz made a controversial remark, saying, “So in those sort of situations, what you need to do is arrange boys to be@t up the mother.”
