"‘Providing is not a husband's first duty’ — Relationship Coach Pastor Bisi Adewale Sparks Conversation Online"

Renowned marriage counselor and cleric Pastor Bisi Adewale has triggered widespread discussion following his latest teaching on the primary spiritual and structural responsibilities of a husband.

Speaking during a sermon, the pastor said many men misunderstand their role in marriage by placing financial provision and affection above their spiritual responsibilities.

According to him, the first duty of a married man is to serve as the priest of his family, maintaining a strong relationship with God and leading his household spiritually.

“The first duty of a man in marriage is not to provide. The first duty of a man in marriage is not to love his wife. The first duty of a man in marriage is to be a priest of the family,” he said.

Pastor Adewale further argued that a man who loves his wife without first loving God may eventually hurt her because his love could become selfish and centered on personal demands.

“It is not about loving your wife. If you love your wife without loving God, very soon, you will be wicked to that woman because you won’t even know how to love her. Your love will be selfish love, demanding love,” he stated.

The cleric referenced a biblical principle, stressing that seeking God should come before every other aspect of life, including marriage.

Quoting the scripture, he said, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and every other thing shall be added,” adding that marriage is among the “other things” that follow when a person prioritizes God.
