Chaos in Abuja: Sowore faints as police deploy tear gas against Democracy Day protesters (VIDEO)
A Democracy Day demonstration turned chaotic at the Unity Fountain in Abuja on Friday, as prominent human rights activist Omoyele Sowore collapsed during a tense standoff with security forces. The sudden medical emergency triggered widespread panic among demonstrators and bystanders, following a heavy police crackdown aimed at dispersing the peaceful crowd.
Sowore was said to have collapsed after police operatives moved to disperse protesters gathered to demonstrate against insecurity, economic hardship and poor governance.
The demonstrators were dispersed after security personnel deployed tear gas canisters in an apparent attempt to break up the gathering.
Amid the incident, Sowore has now been reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital for further examination and treatment.
