But MS office , icons for word, excel etc, are displaying to unknown format. When I click open the file it is opening in correct format. If the Office icons are blank after installing Office from the Microsoft Store, then Open Settings > Apps. Find Microsoft Office Desktop Apps in. Scroll down to the icon you want to use, click it. Click Change program and select the program with which you want to associate that icon. Share.

I decided to purchase Office Professional Plus with a discounted price offered from work. Now word documents open in Microsoft Word by default like they should. However, by changing the default, the icons for word documents have changed from the normal word icon to a blank icon with lines and a ” DOCX ” written on the bottom of the icon.

My countless hours searching online for a fix have failed. I tried uninstalling Office Starter and then reinstalling Office Professional Plus with no luck, so I system restored back. If I try to open a document with Office Starter, it now asks me for a product key which doesn’t make any sense since that is supposed to be a free limited version that shipped with the laptop.

I can still open everything with Office Professional Plus, but if I set Microsoft Word as the default, then I get the wrong icons. I am positive that Office Starter is causing this problem with the icons somehow because only word documents and excel spreadsheets are effected not PowerPoint, Access or other programs that come with Office Professional AND because on my Vista desktop that has Office and has never had Office Starter , I have no problems at the moment.

How can I keep the proper Office icons while having Microsoft Word instead of the Virtualization Handler that initiates the starter edition as the default for.
