I like the premise of the story: how a conman ultimately wins the heart of a beautiful but tragically blind girl after passing for her long lost brother in an attempt to scam her money.
Oh Young has everything in terms of wealth, but pretty much nothing else when it comes to family, friends, love, career, health, freedom, independence or the simple joy of living. Since this is a romance, we know she will fall in love with the charismatic but heartless Oh Soo, but why? How can she forgive him? I hated both characters at first. Oh Young’s cold personality and rich girl’s entitled attitude does not endear me to her initially.
But upon learning more about her tragic story one wonders what actually made her want to continue living at all. Gradually, despite or because of her pitiful existence, I began to root for her relationship with Oh Soo, who turned out to have an almost equally tragic life and the only salvation for both of them seems to be their falling in love with each other, however improbable.
Oh Soo’s story is colorful and a great contrast to Oh Young’s. However, after a while I don’t care much for the backstory and subplots with the gangsters anymore – and ultimately they make little sense especially towards the finale. However, I liked the determination of Oh Soo to persist in rescuing Oh Young once he has truly fallen in love for her, despite his own troubles and dire future.
The emotional moments when our unlikely couple gradually establish their relationship are the highlights of the show. That the initial relationship is based on a lie with an ugly motive and the subsequent and uncomfortable transition from a fake sibling love to romantic love somehow added an interesting dimension to the story, which would otherwise be more boring and classical.
Even though the script lacks subtlety, I feel their performance do convey a sense of conflict, loss, pain, vulnerability as well as joy and tenderness as their characters’ attraction for each other grow. Visually, the show is effectively enhanced by the gorgeous cinematography and winter scenery, which I absolutely love. To me the biggest disappointment comes from the ending. Not so much the outcome as the development and transitions leading up to it. Won’t go into details or spoilers but suffice to say many things made no sense or are poorly developed.
It’s a pity as the characters and the actors deserve better and the story had the potential to be great. As such, I would recommend this show if you like the concept and can manage your expectations to overlook the incoherences. Hwangkidong Jun 27, Details Edit. Release date February 13, South Korea.

That Winter the Wind Blows : Wow. I loved this while I watched it, and I did not expect to like it at all. That Winter hurts my heart, makes me tense, and gives me a lot of adorable, cute, and endearing goodness in between the angst. All the cuteness is really just so they hurt my heart even more in the next minute.
The actors are amazing. The writing is tight and the story is gripping. But… We have a conman who has lived by stealing, gambling, and cheating others, who got a girl pregnant and then dumped her, who continues to sleep around.
We have a very creepy bad guy who would not mind seeing him dead but wants to torture him a while first. Somebody else raved about it, though, and I was curious…. And then I was hooked. And there was bromance, which, if you read my reviews, you know that this is one of my top 3 drama weaknesses the other two are cute kids or warm family connections, and I think bromance is a subset of the second, and if the leads are under 30, a subset of the first as well, since if you are under 30, I am more than old enough to be your mother so you are all kids to me.
The two men have the same name and actually used to be good friends, but real oppa died, which our conman knows. Conman did not choose the mistaken identity, but once it happens he runs with it, planning to cheat the girl out of the money and run.
Only, of course, he kind of starts to fall in love with her. It gets a bit squicky at times- while still being actually very chaste. Zo In-sung as our conman Oh Soo. Soo is also a con artist who preys on the rich and he sets sights on a new target: Oh Young, pretending to be her long-lost brother.
Zo In-sung hits it out of the park with his acting here. He was amazing, convincing, heartbreaking. Just, wow. Song Hye-kyo as Oh Young. She became estranged from her mother and older brother when her parents divorced when she was a child. Now legally blind, she is the sole heiress to a giant conglomerate after her father passes away.
She is so beautiful, and I am stunned at how believable she makes her character. She is luminously beautiful in her role in this drama. Hot-head Jin-sung dreams of scraping up enough money to buy his father an organic cattle farm. Fiercely loyal to Oh Soo. I loved his character here, and the bromance was adorable. Hee-sun is a quirky, tomboyish girl with a deep fondness for flowers and for her sister. Though Hee-sun tries to despise Soo after he leaves Hee-joo, she finds that she cannot.
She did a great job with her role as well. Bae Jong-ok as Wang Hye-ji- Misunderstood? Incredibly Machiavellian? He has his reasons. Are they sound? That off goes double for him.
Only seen in flashbacks. Somebody may or may not have a brain tumour. It is a melo. He sees at the last minute and rushes in to save her. So he fetches her out of the river and then slaps her to bring her to her senses. This action even though it was hard to watch makes her really begin to trust that he is truly her beloved Oppa. If tihs link is missing, then try to look at the first two minutes of episode 5 at Viki or elsewhere :.
However, the other thing about this drama is that there is almost nobody in this story that I feel apathetic about. I want to know all their back-stories, and I want to know what happens to each of them. Maybe more than one somebody.
I am not the only one affected this way by this drama. As far as family viewing goes, probably not, as I said, but I thought the most screening required was in the first episode- the rest were much tamer. Things to know when watching a K-drama. What is it I like about K-Dramas? You might be watching a K-Drama if….
